Quantum Sensation

A sensitive exhibition between art and quantum physics

Museum Maison Poincaré, Paris

April, 10th  – July, 26th 2025

convey a feeling of quantum physics

Quantum physics is one of the world most well-verified theories in the world, yet its successes remain mysterious to many.

Highly mathematical, it deals with objects tat are typically inaccessible to our senses, defying our intuitions and imagination. In fact, it allows us to glimpse radically new dimensions of reality, evoking a sense of unprecedented vertigo. By explaining our world, it reveals a side imbued with mystery.

This exhibition is the result of a research-creation collaboration between philosopher Céline Boisserie-Lacroix, and artist Caroline Delétoille. Drawing on quantum physics research conducted at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory (Paris, France) and the Quantum Matter Institute (Vancouver, Canada), the exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in works created by Caroline Delétoille, offering a unique opportunity to experience and perceive the singularity of the quantum perspective. The installation will also feature scientific mediation workshops and events that combine scientific, artistic, and philosophical perspectives on quantum physics.

“We must be clear that when it comes to atoms, language can be used only as in poetry. The poet is not nearly so concerned with describing facts as with creating images and establishing mental connections.”

Niels Bohr

curatorial team : a philosopher, an artist, a physicist

“Quantum Sensation” is a research-creation project resulting from an original collaboration between a philosopher of emotions (Céline Boisserie-Lacroix, PhD., Jean Nicod Institute, ENS-EHESS), a visual artist (Caroline Delétoille), and a quantum physicist (Aurore Young, Kastler Brossel Laboratory, Collège de France).

This research involved quantum laboratories in France and Canada: the Kastler Borssel Laboratory (Collège de France, Sorbonne Université, ENS, CNRS) in Paris and the Steward Blusson Quantum Matter Institute at the Universituy of British Columbia in Vancouver.

It will lead to an exhibition in 2025, offering an immersive journey through an installation of paintings by the artist Caroline Delétoille.

Céline Boisserie-Lacroix
Philosopher

Artistic curation

Céline Boisserie-Lacroix holds a Phd. in Philosophy from the Jean-Nicod Institute in Paris, ENS & EHESS. She holds an engineering degree from ESPCI-PSL with in-depth training in physics, chemistry and neurobiology. Her research is at the crossroads of the philosophy of mind, aesthetics and contemporary art. She dedicated her Master’s thesis to collaborations between artists and scientists, proposing a model of the aesthetic experience of such projects. Her doctoral thesis then developed the role of emotions in our rationality and the justification of beliefs.

Caroline Delétoille
Artist

Artistic creation

Caroline Delétoille studied mathematics and continued with management in Lille and in Japan. Then involved 8 years in industrial strategy, she developed painting in art studios and decided to devote herself to it. Her works have since been exhibited in France and in Spain. She was notably exhibited at Gallery Opening in Barcelona and then was awarded from the Salon de Pierrefitte. Her work has been the subject of a solo show at the IESA gallery in Paris. She is interested in memory, the ordinary and the trace of time. She works through painting techniques to which she associates writing in a search for pictorial material and narratives.

Aurore Young
Physicist

Scientific curation

Aurore Young is a doctoral physicist at the Kastler Brossel Laboratory, Collège de France, CNRS, Sorbonne Université, and ENS. She has devoted herself to research since 2020. First a graduate of ENAC, she began her career in Canada where she coded major video game projects during 7 years. She then decided to return to an academic career to dedicate herself to fundamental physics. She has since been graduated with a Master II ICFP in Quantum Physics, and she is a doctoral student at the College de France. Her research focuses on the implementation of long-lived quantum states.

Agenda - around the exhibition

Conference “Carte Blanche” to Alain Aspect, Nobel prize winner 2022

From concepts to applications: the two quantum revolutions

Thursday, April 17th, 2025  — Poincaré Museum  19h

The first quantum revolution is based on the concept of wave-particle duality, discovered by Albert Einstein and Louis de Broglie. It helped elucidate the structure of matter in its most subtle aspects and led to the invention of the transistor, the laser, and computer circuits, the foundation of the information and communication society. The second quantum revolution is primarily based on the concept of entanglement, brought to light by the quasi-philosophical debate between Einstein and Niels Bohr, which began in 1935. The extraordinary nature of this concept was confirmed by experimental tests of Bell’s inequalities, highlighted by the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Alain Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger. Entanglement and the development of methods for controlling single quantum objects are used in the various quantum technologies currently under development, from quantum information to quantum metrology and quantum computers.
By Alain Aspect, Professor at the Institut d’Optique Graduate School – Université Paris-Saclay, Professor at the École Polytechnique, and Director of Research Emeritus at the CNRS.
